[livejournal.com profile] spunspider recommended me this year's Ishaqzaade by telling me that if I love dysfunction, I will love this movie.

She was right.

Ishaqzaade follows Parma and Zoya - members of rival, bloodthirsty political families in UP and all the bad things that happen when they get tangled up.

First off (and that can be either good or bad, depending on your tastes) - this movie doesn't feel Bollywood. It makes me think of South Indian cinema (is it a remake of a Tamil movie or similar?). It is gritty (even the rich live in houses with dust), hella violent, and dark. Actually, it is a lot darker than most any 'romantic' Bollywood movie I can think of. Both Zoya and Parma are violent, damaged people. In some ways, it's a throwback to the 1980s, but not a bad one. Despite the fact that Parma does some truly reprehensible things, I can't help it - while I wanted to strangle him in the first half, the second half of the movie made me ship Parma and Zoya like mad (what can I say, I am a sucker for the '(sort of) good woman redeems bad man' narrative and this one was both hot and adorable) and hope against hope that they could find some way out of the madhouse of their town. My heart is very much with Zoya, especially, who discovers all the horrors that can ensue when one impulsive action places her beyond the pale in her family.

The shipper in me would have loved this movie if for no other reason than the 'falling for each other properly' sequences set in the brothel...

Yash Chopra has died :(

Some of his movies (Veer-Zaara, Deewar, etc) are all-time favorites of mine.

:(

Have a song from Veer Zaara (where Zaara is progressing with her arranged marriage, while fantasizing that she sees Veer everywhere). VZ is my most favorite Bollywood movie:

Mausam...

I have just started Mausam, a Bollywood love story which stars Shahid Kapoor as a Sikh guy and Sonam Kapoor as a Muslim girl who fall in love. I've seen Veer-Zaara, I know how badly it can go.

But I think I fell in love with the movie from this instant, her giggling behind her veil at his mud-splattered face.

Please don't break my heart. I am still dehydrated from my hysterics over Veer-Zaara, all those years ago.

So, what did I miss?? Any dramas worth watching? How is Man of Honor? Tree with Deep Roots? Something else I should be watching?

Am currently fighting sleep deprivation by watching Veer, which is the most chesetastic awesome Bollywood thing ever.

Also, by checking out Don 2 trailer:

I really enjoyed the first one and it's a total treat to see (a) a Bollywood movie whose protagonist is a sociopath (talk about different) and (b) SRK returning to his bad guy roots. It is, after all, how he started out before he became a megastar and lover supreme.

Oh, and I want him and Priyanka's character please please please have hot hatesex. Kthanks.

Nope, it's not a romance novel cover, it's a poster for the new SRK/Kareena movie. EEEEE! It helps that I am obsessed with seeing them together again.

To nobody's surprise, it's the gazebo scene between Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Even though I love this movie, I do not love it enough to put in my Top 15. But that scene! That scene is insane!

Bonus is my favorite song picturization, also between Kajol and Shahrukh. This time from Kabhi Khushi Kabie Gham. I first saw this years ago and nothing has yet beat it.

I was going to say "Bollywood" but there are two Telugu movies in here, so there it is.

Please tell me someone will read this. It took me two freaking hours to put together )

[livejournal.com profile] filmi_girl and I went to see the Bollywood hit (apparently, the biggest opening ever) Bodyguard starring huge Mousie favorites Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Kareena plays a rich girl who pretends she is in love with her bodyguard (Salman) to get him to loosen up but things spiral out of control. There are some gorgeous musical numbers, mondo violence, a surprisingly touching love story, a hilarious amount of comedy, and a scene in which a strategically aimed water pipe literally explodes the shirt off Salman's body.

Basically, I laughed a lot and swooned a fair amount - it was worth every penny of the ticket price. Best way to describe the vibe is that as far as I know, it is not a South Indian remake but it almost feels like it could be.

Have a gorgeous song from it:

There was also a trailer for RA 1, which I will watch no matter what because once a Sharukh fangirl, always a Sharukh fangirl, and when he came on-screen something funny happened to my insides.

Also, somehow, I did not realize that Kareena was playing his love interest in this. !!!!!! I've been obsessed with their on-screen chemistry since Asoka (which is probably my favorite Bollywood movie ever) so to see an encore...OMG dream come true!

And now I want to go and rewatch Asoka, especially all the scenes where he calls her 'my warrior' and teaches her to use a sword - skills she turns against him when, driven by her supposed death, he descends into emptiness and bloodlust and she faces him on the battlefield. OTPOTPOTP! It's so odd - in the latter half of the movie, once he turns into a monster, I hate him hate him hate him, but the moment he goes down on his knees before her, weeping and begging forgiveness, I find myself yelling "take him back take him back take him back!" Have a MV:

More MVs )

I think I am about to go on a Shahrukh binge. Also, I think I must make a much overdue Top 10 Indian Movies list.
